Baulkham Hills housing skews toward larger detached homes on generous blocks, much of it built from the 1980s onward with usable roof space. That combination is close to ideal for ducted air conditioning, and it is what most Hills District customers end up choosing.

The reasons are practical rather than aspirational:

• Floor areas here are large enough that conditioning room-by-room with split systems means four, five or six separate units — more expensive to buy and install than a single ducted system, and noisier.
• Roof spaces in Hills homes are generally accessible and tall enough for a fan coil and ductwork, which is not true across much of inner Sydney.
• Two-storey homes are common here, and heat collecting upstairs is a real problem. A properly zoned ducted system — or in some layouts two systems — handles that far better than splits fighting it room by room.
• Larger blocks mean condenser placement is rarely constrained, so there is no compromise on where the outdoor unit goes.

That said, split and multi-split systems still make sense here — for a granny flat, a home office conversion, a room addition, or where you only need to condition one or two spaces. We quote both so you can compare on your actual house.

Baulkham Hills sits inland and elevated, which cuts both ways. Summers are hot — routinely into the high 30s and past 40°C — with none of the coastal sea breeze that moderates the eastern suburbs. Winter mornings are genuinely cold by Sydney standards, colder than the coast, and the heating side of a reverse cycle system gets a real workout here.

That makes reverse cycle the sensible choice rather than cooling-only. It also means undersizing shows up twice a year rather than once. Homes with large west-facing windows — common on Hills blocks positioned for the view — need capacity sized for the afternoon load, not the average.

Newer estates generally have better insulation and perform closer to the baseline. Older Hills homes from the 70s and 80s frequently have minimal ceiling insulation and need a step up in capacity, or insulation work alongside the installation.
